W dzisiejszych czasach narasta poczucie kruchości cywilizacji jako takich. Przeróżne wydarzenia na całym świecie – ataki terrorystyczne, gwałtowne przewroty społeczne, a nawet klęski żywiołowe – budzą w nas niepokojąco złowrogie odczucie. Jonathan Lear jest filozofem, profesorem w Committee on Social Thought na Uniwersytecie w Chicago i, co ma dla tej książki kapitalne znaczenie, praktykującym psychoanalitykiem. Studiował filozofię na Uniwersytecie w Cambridge i Uniwersytecie Rockefellera w Nowym Jorku, gdzie obronił doktorat w roku 1978. Zajmuje się głównie filozoficznymi koncepcjami ludzkiej duszy od czasów Sokratesa do współczesności. Studiował również w Instytucie Psychoanalizy Western New England University. Jest autorem książek: Aristotle and Logical Theory (1980), Aristotle: the Desire to Understand (1988), Love and Its Place in Nature: A Philosophical Interpretation of Freudian Psychoanalysis (1990), Open Minded: Working Out the Logic of the Soul (1998), Happiness, Death and the Remainder of Life (2000), Therapeutic Action: an Earnest Plea for Irony (2003), Freud (2005).
